How to Apply Eye Shadow / Techniques
Steps to Applying Eye Shadow
Here are the Steps to Applying Eye Shadow:
- Being with an eye shadow base primer on the skin where you plan to apply shadow. Brush this on lightly and evenly from the lash line to your brow.
- Apply medium shades to the lower part of the lid. Remember to apply lightly you can adjust later.
- Using a darker shade, apply color to the crease line
- Blend these first two carefully together using either a brush or a cotton swab.
- Apply your main color on the upper lid. Round the edge of this color if your eyes are older or deeply set. Feather it if your eyes are younger.

It should be noted that there is some disagreement about whether to apply eyeliner before or after shadow. I prefer after, but that’s a personal approach only. After that, all that’s left is mascara and you’ve mastered the art of how to apply eye shadow. Well, maybe not mastered – practice makes perfect.

If you want to experiment with new eye looks or expand your eye makeup wardrobe - here are my favorite products:
Eye Shadow Palettes
If you do want to be able to experiment with new colors and looks, I recommend a high quality eye shadow palette. This will save you money in the long run because you will have so many choices in one collection, rather than multiple individual items.
My favorite eye shadow collection is this Pur Minerals Inspire, Reflect, Celebrate Eye Palette. It is pressed Mineral Makeup. You get 15 great colors for $25 - this is a great bargain.
It collection contains 15 signature Pressed Mineral Eye Shadows in both warm and cool shades to create an array of custom eye looks for any occasion and any skin tone. It also some with a booklet that illustrates how to create many great looks.
Here are two other great palettes that would be a great addition to any eye makeup wardrobe:
Eye Shadow Primer
Until you have used primer, you will never believe the difference it can make. I recommend it as the first Steps to Applying Eye Shadow. My preference is the Urban Decay Primer, but the Bare Vitamins one is good also. When you use this your eyeshadow will stay in place until you take it off and it will not smear or crease - it is a one of those products that you will wonder how you lived without it.
A less expensive alternative - I do love that cute little Genie bottle and the product is fabulous - but it isn't cheap and it is very hard to get the product out of the bottle - you have to remove the inner rim of the bottle (with needle-nose pliers - I learned that from a beauty forum!) to get to the second half of the product. Recently I joined BeautiControl for their skin care products and stumbled upon their Eye Shadow Control Cream. I figured it wouldn't be as good as the more expensive primers - but much to my delight it is every bit as good. They make it in three colors - neutral, pink and taupe. You get a one-half ounce tube for $8 and it just takes a tiny dot of the product - it will last a very long time and is much more economical than the better known brands. I have also started using the taupe as a shadow on casual days to give a bit of color without going the full route - so it doubles as a cream eye shadow. If you would like more info you can check it out here - Eye Shadow Control Cream.
