The most popular means of getting a dramatic eye appearance is by the use of eyeliner. In choosing your eyeliner make sure it's no more than one shade darker than your eyebrows. This way you'll get a natural look that still pops. Certainly you can use a black eye pencil if you prefer but that's getting closer to a Gothic appeal. (See Gothic Eye Makeup Tips.)

Dramatic Eye Makeup ExampleIn applying eyeliner begin at the corner of your eye closest to your nose and move smoothly outward. Most dramatic looks pull the line upward diagonally at the very end. I you're using liner under your eyes do NOT connect the upper and lower lines together. This will shrink your eyes – just opposite of your goal. (See How to Apply Eye Liner or consider Tightlining your eyes.)

Note: smudging your eyeliner on the upper lid helps make your eyes look smoky. (See Smoky Eye.)

After you've settled on an eyeliner picking the perfect eye shadow is the next step. You want three shades – a light shade near your eyelashes, a darker shade for the crease of your eyes, and a medium shade over the crease line. This creates the illusion that your eye is larger. Make sure you blend these all the way up to your eyebrows. (See Eye Shadow by Eye Color .)

Dramatic Eye Makeup ExampleFor the ultimate dramatic eyes, consider false eyelashes. Otherwise finish your look off with coordinating Mascara on both the lower and upper lashes, curling them afterward. Remember if you have very light skin or eyes you probably do not want to use black mascara. There are a lot of other colors out there. Experiment a bit at the makeup counter to find a color that's better suited to your complexion. (See Colored Mascara.)

Facial Backdrop

Dramatic Eye Makeup ExampleIn creating your dramatic eye makeup remember that its part of a whole look that you're designing with your face as the backdrop. When you apply makeup your face should be clean and moisturized. Use a smooth foundation with a suitable tone for your skin and a concealer under your eyes.

Clean and shape your eyebrows, penciling them as needed, then finish your face with a light powder (this can have some sparkle to it if you wish). That will help your makeup last longer and smudge less easily.

By following these hints, you'll have fantastic dramatic eye makeup that rounds out your overall look any time – day or night.
